YANGON -- An official media report confirmed on Wednesday that three people were killed while two others were wounded in an attack on a passenger boat on Tuesday on the Thanlwin River in Myanmar's state of Kayin.
The report said that the 'Saw Ohmma', belonging to the state-run Myanmar Inland Water Transport, came under attack by about 20 gunmen from the river bank. The gunmen fired at the boat with small weapons on Tuesday morning as it was on its way back to Hpa-an, capital of the state of Kayin. The report added that the passenger boat's security personnel returned fire.
Authorities believe that the attack was linked to an anti-government ethnic armed group of the Kayin National Union (KNU) - the biggest rebel group in Myanmar.
